Best Plants to Give at Christmas or Holidays

Great Flowers or Live Christmas Tree Gifts for Plant Lovers

Nov 8, 2009 Angela England

Gardeners love plants for Christmas, of course, as most are eager to be back in the garden. What plants would be the best gifts for gardeners?

Consider these common live flower gifts for Christmas, or think of more unusual plant selections to give a special gardener.

Poinsettias for Christmas Presents and Hostess Gifts

Poinsettias are a popular Christmas gift, especially for the hostess of Christmas parties or party centerpieces. Often poinsettias are given as live flower arrangements which die soon after the holidays unless they are properly cared for after Christmas. The red “flowers” of poinsettias are actually red foliage which turns colors based on the light exposure, but the red and green creates a stunning look for any Christmas or holiday arrangement.

Live Christmas Trees as Holiday Gifts for Gardeners

Live Christmas trees are often given as Christmas gifts for gardeners who love plants and wouldn't want to sacrifice a tree for their holiday décor. Often, the smaller size potted Christmas trees are actually rosemary plants, a fragrant, woody herb. Rosemary is known as the remembrance herb and is said to help increase memory and concentration, so it's a great Christmas gift for giving between people who will be parted after the holidays.

Bulb Plants to Grow Indoors for Christmas Garden Gifts

What better gift for a gardener than a plant to grow indoors during the cold winter months when gardening is difficult and slow? Many types of bulbs can be grown indoors during the off-season, a practice called “forcing”. Forced bulb plants can be purchased ready to go from any garden center or plant nursery online. Some garden nursery companies have special gift packs pre-assembled, such as Logan's or Beck's Bulbs. Alternatively, bulbs for forcing can be prepared ahead of time and given as a unique, memorable and long-lasting gift on a “DIY” basis.

Ornamental Shrubs or Perennial Live Plants

One holiday trend that has increased in recent years is the giving of ornamental shrubs and perennials during the Christmas season. Often these plants have been forced into blooming during the off-season, which can make them more prone to stress when being planted outdoors later in the spring. However, many gardeners would be cheered by seeing the gorgeous flowers that are normally only available in the spring or summer.

Popular shrubs or perennial plants for Christmas and holiday gift giving include:

  • Camellia – Winter blooming flowers and glossy, evergreen foliage makes them a sure winner as a Christmas present for gardeners.
  • Hydrangea – Large and colorful flower clusters will cheer any drab winter for plant lovers.
  • Dwarf fruit trees – These oranges, lemons or limes are often purchased easily from online garden nursery shops and come in decorative plant containers, providing gardeners with a beautiful and useful Christmas present.
  • Gardenia – Another glossy-leaved shrub, the white, fragrant flowers are popular for perfuming the winter air indoors.

Almost any evergreen, or perennial shrub, will brighten the winter holidays for a gardener stuck inside by inclement weather. Consider ordering plants with decorative containers that can be used for accent plantings during the next growing season.
