Here are some Mother's Day gift ideas for a gardener. Visit a destination garden center for a day of plant shopping or a botanic garden to soak up gardening ideas.

Here are some Mother’s Day gift ideas for those who have moms that garden. These gardening gifts are terrific ways to spend time celebrating Mother’s Day.

Plant Shopping

The second best place gardeners love to be is where plants are sold. Pick a favorite destination garden center or plant nursery, gather up the plant list and spend the day plant shopping.

The joy in searching out plants from a sea of benches in a greenhouse, reading small details on plant tags or striking up a garden conversation with a fellow shopper is priceless. Be the one navigating the plant cart, lifting heavy pots or reaching for hanging baskets.

A variation of the plant shopping idea is to choose a never-before-visited garden center. Search for a big new destination garden center or well-respected plant seller, perhaps turning the day into an overnight mini-vacation.

For moms who are container gardeners, choose a garden center that specializes in containers and dwarf plants. Some garden centers have a self-plant-it section allowing gardeners to come in and plant a container, leaving the mess behind. In the home, one idea is install a pulley system so a heavy hanging basket can be lowered for easy watering.

If the gardening mom prefers to shop on-line or by catalog gather up all the resources and make a day of plant shopping from home. Make the day special by having lunch outdoors or just decide to spend the whole day in pajamas while hovering over the computer.

Finally, pay the bill. Gardening can be expensive. If the gardening mom has a large landscape, limit the plant shopping to one garden bed, chosen in advance. Or get all the siblings involved and each person can choose a garden bed to sponsor.

Other Gardening Ideas

The number one favorite place gardeners want to be is in their own garden. Other Mother’s Day gift ideas for gardening moms include doing some heavy lifting or getting hands dirty. First, find out what help is needed in the garden. Maybe it is an old shrub that needs replacing, a patch of perennials that requires digging and dividing or a vegetable garden that should be tilled before planting. A gardening mom will appreciate the help.

If outside activity or manual labor is not an option, try searching out author events at the local library or bookseller. Meeting and listening to garden writers speak about their books and finishing with a book signing is also a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Visiting Botanical Gardens

Visiting a botanical garden is a traditional Mother’s Day gift idea. Take that idea further by investigating the classes or volunteer projects offered at a local botanical garden and arrange to attend one together. Some volunteer projects, with a larger focus, are aimed at improving a community issue such as controlling invasive plants. Some classes are offered to increase the gardener’s knowledge, for example learning how to identify the region’s native wildflowers.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is very large with an exhaustive list of garden styles to walk through. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s Buehler Enabling Garden is well known and offers many ideas to take away and use in the home garden.
